Subject Competence Niche, as we like to call it, within the area maintenance of offshore living quarters, is defined as the “interaction between selection of material, design solutions and workmanship” in relation to use and utilization, in particular, for rooms and areas exposed to heavy traffic and/or load, such as galley, change rooms and areas exposed to chemicals, etc.

The importance of knowledge and experience in all phases of design and construction, from floor laying through finished room, cannot be stressed enough in the selection of the most suitable materials and solutions. As we see it, such skill should be given its own identity and defined as a separate Competence Niche & Business Area.

With many years’ experience from the early 1980’s in new constructions of offshore platforms, APPLY LQ Partner has, over the last 10 – 12 years, consciously concentrated its efforts on renovations and conversions of existing platforms. gradually building up experience and knowledge within this particular niche.

In our opinion it is imperative that that the customers and architects who specify standards and functionality of the offshore Living Quarter, should also be aware of the special requirements to be met for materials and installation procedures. The challenges include selection of proper materials and the detail solutions between the different elements, such as floors, interior walls, ceilings, as well as borders between floors, foundations, screed and gully solutions in wet rooms, etc. Special knowledge and understanding of how the total construction and individual elements interacts, is of essence in order to find the solutions giving the lowest lifetime cost while satisfying the customer’s requirements of functionality.

Numerous parameters are deciding in this connection, such as:

• Construction Quality (lowest possible lifetime cost),
• Aesthetic and Hygienic effect on environment,
• Approval of Materials offshore (certification),
• Functionality/Compatibility between materials,
• Functionality of construction (i.e. Customers’ expectation),and requirements for operation of construction, and others.

The key to finding the good solutions is people with genuine interest, understanding and skill to meet these challenges and special requirements offshore.
